As we reported live, it was a short night for Dario Franchitti and the Chip Ganassi Dream Team at the Grand-Am Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Franchitti began the race in the #02 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates BMW/Riley entry. The Williamson County resident dominated during much of his stint, leading for 52 laps.
Juan Pablo Montoya got behind the wheel next, and managed to stay in the lead for much of his turn. Jamie McMurray then drove, and lost several positions during his run.
Montoya returned to the cockpit, then shortly after midnight the car began smoking. Montoya came in with an engine problem that ended the race for the team. The problem was attributed to a bad piston. Scott Dixon never got the opportunity to drive.
The team completed 249 laps, having led 139 of them when the engine blew. They finished 37th in the 45-car field.
The Action Express Racing/Porsche Riley team of Joao Barbosa, Terry Borcheller, Mike Rockenfeller and Ryan Dalziel won the event by completing 755 laps.
The SpeedSource/Mazda RX-8 team of Sylvain Tremblay, David Haskell, Nick Ham and Jonathan Bomarito won the GT event with 707 laps completed.
