Tommy Joe Martins isn't your typical ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards competitor. He is splitting his time in 2010 between The University of Mississippi in Oxford; where he is a junior with honors majoring in Broadcast Journalism and Race tracks all across the country. None gets him more rev'ed up than the season opener, the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway.
"Racing at Daytona has always been a dream of mine," said Martins, "and I can't wait to get there."
Martins hopes to carry over some of his momentum from last season where he was an ASA standout driving for NASCAR's Baker/Curb Racing. In just a handful of starts, Martins had 2 front row starts including the pole award and a 4th place finish in Memphis' "Kings Ransom 300" ASA Event.
"Last year it seemed wherever we unloaded, we were bad fast," Martins said.
2010 brought new opportunities for Martins as he gets behind the wheel of the newly formed "Martins Motorsports" Ford Fusion. It's a joint effort with veteran ARCA and Nationwide winning Crew Chief, Ronnie Smith and his father, successful businessman Craig Martins. "The deal came together really quickly," says Craig Martins "and we couldn't have found a better fit."
Martins Motorsports is based out of Nashville in the former Sadler Racing facility. The 10,000 square foot building has been home to some of the "NASCAR Greats" including Davey Allison, Jeremy Mayfield and the late Bobby Hamilton just to name a few.
Martins Motorsports has 12 - 14 races scheduled combining events in the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards and the Camping World Truck Series along with Tommy Joe's class schedule at Ole Miss.
Tommy Joe will kickoff the 2010 ARCA Racing Series season presented by RE/MAX and Menards at Daytona International Speedway in the #95 Ford in honor of the late NASCAR Team owner Earl Sadler. "Mr. Earl helped so many of the drivers get their name out there driving his equipment in NASCAR, and he took pride in that fact," Martins says. He followed their careers as they climbed to the top of the Cup Series and often referred to them as "his boys." Sadler Racing competed in 99 NASCAR cup races as well as numerous Nationwide and ARCA RE/MAX races thru the years with an All-Star cast filling the seat. He will be greatly missed.
